About

Familiar, and better for it

On the kind of day that calls for a hot, filling bowl, this is an easy place to walk into. Somugwan builds its table around beef gukbap — a plain, proper meal anyone can sit down to without ceremony.

Rather than chase flourish, the kitchen concentrates on the basics, adding its own care to dishes everyone already knows.

Familiar, and better for it — deeper for the care behind it.

The Bowl

One bowl, deep and clear

Beef gukbap is the house dish: a deep, well-drawn broth with a generous amount in it. A spoon of rice, a mouthful of broth — the appeal of gukbap is that it asks nothing of you.

Shank and knuckle
Both cuts go into the pot — they are what gives the broth its body.
Five banchan
Five side dishes come with every bowl.
Noon and evening
A settling meal in the middle of a busy day; a warm one at the end of it.

Suyuk & Jeon

Suyuk, potato jeon, and a drink beside it

Beyond the gukbap there is a beef bulgogi rice bowl and tender boiled beef — dishes that suit anyone at the table.

The potato jeon comes out golden outside and soft within: good alongside a meal, and just as good with suyuk and a light drink.

The Room

Timber and lamplight

A pitched timber ceiling, vertical slatted partitions, and light that spreads low between them. A noren bearing the restaurant's name hangs at the kitchen doorway; ink-wash paintings hang on the walls.

It suits a solid meal on your own as easily as a long table shared with colleagues and friends.
